How Times Have Changed!

I was going through some of my genealogical documents and came on the following article. I Thought our readers would find it interesting even though it is from Missouri, not Virginia. It really shows how things have changed between "Then and Now" I wonder if this was typical elsewhere in the United States, or if these rules were peculiar to Missouri.

Friday, April 5, 1918

On April first - set hour clock ahead - in accordance with the law recently enacted by Congress. This savings of one hour of daylight will help the Nation--
Expediate the training of our Army.
Speed up production.
Increase ship building operations.
Lessen industrial accidents.
Improve health, morals, Social Welfare
Parents will have a new hour with their children.
Bills for gas and fuel will be cut down.
Garden production will be increased.
We will save 1,500,000 lbs of coal (fuel)
Day-Light is Money-Don't waste it.

1915 -- Rules for Teachers

1. You will not marry during the term.

2. You are not to keep company with men.

3. You must be home between the hours of 8 am and 6 am unless attending a school function.

4. You may not loiter downtown in ice cream stores.

5. You may not travel beyond the city limits unless you have permission of the chairman of the board.

6. You may not ride in a carriage or automobile with any man unless he is your father or brother.

7. You may not smoke cigarettes.

8. You may not dress in bright colors.

9. You may not under any circumstances dye your hair.

10. You must wear at least two petticoats.

11. Your dresses must not be any shorter than two inches above your ankle.

12. To keep the school room neat and clean, you must sweep the floor at least once a day, scrub the floor at least once a week with hot, soapy water, clean the blackboards at least once a day and start a fire at 7am so the room will be warm by 8am.
